My scale displays 'OUTZ'. What does this mean?

This message indicates that the scale has lost its calibration or the load cell may be damaged. Try calibrating your scale using the steps in the user manual first. If calibration does not work, contact our support department. 

 

When should I calibrate my scale?

Calibration is performed at the factory and many users will not need to calibrate for quite some time. If your measurements require maximum accuracy, we recommend purchasing calibration weights for your scale and checking accuracy from time to time, calibrating when needed. If you are using your scale several times a day and weighing close to full capacity, you may need to calibrate monthly or quarterly. If you only weigh occasionally and keep your scale well protected, you may only need to calibrate once a year or less. Always use trusted calibration weights. Do not use arbitrary items like coins or canned goods to calibrate. Only calibration weights are accurate enough for calibration precision scales.

 

How accurate is my scale?

Scale accuracy will depend on several factors including your scale's readability, environmental conditions, and calibration just to name a few. Accuracy will degrade over time as components wear down. 

 

What is readability?

Readability is the smallest increment of the scale's display. To use a wristwatch analogy, readability would be the smallest increment of time discernible on the dial (typically 1 second), but it is not the same as accuracy. 

 

My scale displays 'UNST'. What does this mean?

This is the instability warning. Try using the scale in a more stable location. 

 

 

TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR DIGITAL SCALE

Here are some suggestions and advice on what action to take if your mini scale has ceased to function properly. The manufacturer’s warranty is covered for 10 years however there are certain exclusions. Before returning the scale and spending money on postage please go through the following points:

  1.  Batteries

    Check whether the scale needs new batteries and if so replace them. Be careful to properly insert the batteries in the correct manner.

  2.  Calibration and Surrounding Environment

    The scales are calibrated by the factory before shipment but after travelling around the world they may need re calibration as per the manufacturers’ guidelines.  Gravity is not the same all over the world. Also scales are sensitive to drafts and vibration. The above factors mean that the more sensitive the scale, the more it may need re calibration.

  3.  Abuse or Lack of Care

    If the scale has lacked TLC, has a broken platform, has lost its battery cover, has dents or cigarette burns, has batteries that have been allowed to leak, is rusty having been immersed in water; these are not the fault of the manufacturer and are not covered by warranty.

  4.  Contamination

    If the scale is contaminated with unknown substances which could be illegal or hazardous it must not be returned. It is illegal for us to handle it. Any scales arriving this way will be disposed of immediately and no replacement will be offered.

  5.  Overloading

    Your scale has a maximum capacity and should never be overloaded. If you know that it has been seriously overloaded, e.g. it has been sat on, this is again not the manufacturer’s responsibility.

  6.  Supplier

    Check the sales receipt to confirm that the scale in question came from us and check the date to ensure that it is less than ten years old.

We warrant that our products will be free of manufacturing defects or defects in materials or workmanship for a period of 10 years. This warranty does not extend to damage, in our sole discretion, resulting from misuse, neglect, unreasonable use, overloading the scale, dropping or otherwise shocking the scale, improper service or calibration, normal wear and tear, accident, or failure to use the product it’s intended purpose.

Additionally, we will not service any products that are returned with any foreign substance present. Any received in this condition will be destroyed and disposed of immediately and no compensation will be given.

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, our scales are not waterproof and therefore exposing your scale to liquid is misuse and no compensation will be given in the event signs of water damage are present.

 

 

USING YOUR DIGITAL SCALE: 

High precision scales and balances are sensitive to changes in their environment and require special care and handling to maintain accuracy.

 

Before weighing, you should make sure your scale is level and in a stable area, free from vibrations or drafts of wind.

 

You should press the Zero or Tare key to make sure the scale is properly zeroed before making a measurement. Zero drift can occur due to a number of factors including temperature changes, tilting, residue accumulating on the platform, and even static electricity.

 

Measurements should be taken as soon as your sample is placed on the scale, once the reading has stabilized. Leaving items on the scale for prolonged periods of time can cause zero drift errors.

  

Changes in temperature can have a dramatic effect on zero drift. This is why it is recommended to let your scale acclimatize to surrounding temperatures before use.

 

You should also exercise your scale before use by repeatedly placing a weight of about 1/2 capacity on the scale and removing it several times before making your final measurements.

 

Getting to know your scale and your weighing environment are crucial to obtaining accurate and repeatable results.
